When I begin a painting I have an idea of what I want to paint and where to start. The color palette strongly guides me in a certain direction. Yet I am never quite certain of the outcome, or in what collection the painting will fall. Adding the elements, firing with the flame of a torch, watching the beeswax and pigment combine; adding, smoothing, and heating again, and again until I see what I feel in my heart.
Finally, when I feel an artwork is complete and as far as I can go I sit with it. And contemplate. What do I feel? What is its message? What does it wish to share? And then it comes to me. I know the work is done.
